Book Review - Sociopath

Writer's picture: KiyaKiya

Have you ever wondered about sociopaths? Researchers believe that 2-3% of the world's population could be diagnosed with sociopathy, but few receive diagnosis or treatment.

This memoir is written by a sociopath, Patric. She knew that she was "different" for her entire life. As a child, she would break into empty houses or spy on neighbors. But she loved her mother and sister, so she tried her best to blend in. She failed.

One promise Patric keeps with herself is to never hurt anyone with her choices. This is her code that guides her life. I listened to the audiobook, read by the author. I was fascinated with her story, and startled to realize that while there is diagnosis for sociopathy, often after one's arrest, there is no treatment available. Despite the physical differences we can see in sociopaths' brains, there is so much stigma surrounding this disorder that few people get help or seek counseling.

Patric earned a PhD in psychology and fought for treatment. She expounds on her struggles with apathy. Patric believes that it is this overwhelming apathy that causes sociopaths to act out - their brains are literally screaming for stimulation. Her book is interesting, inspiring, and moving. I learned a lot about a well-hidden condition. I recommend the audiobook, but know that sometimes Patric's voice did make me break out in goosebumps. It was like my body could tell she was "different," too.
